Egor Gerasimov stayed solid and won a three-set thriller against last year finalist Vasek Pospisil at the first round of Sofia Open 2021.
The Belarusian, who earned his place in the main draw after two consecutive wins in the qualifiers, won 5:7, 7:6(8), 6:3.
Belarusian qualified for the main draw with two straight-set wins in the qualifiers. Gerasimov defeated Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 7-6 in the first qualifying round on Sunday and then ousted Turkey’s Altug Celikbilek 7-6, 6-3 in the second qualifying round on Monday.
Next, the current world №112 will have to compete with the defending champion – Jannik Sinner, for a spot in Top 8.
Gerasimov played solid and hit 16 aces as Pospisil had 15. He saved 9 of 11 breakpoints.
