Merterer stunned No. 7 seed Sousa
No. 3 seed Gilles Muller came back from a set down against Andreas Seppi at DIEMA XTRA Sofia Open. Luxembourg born lefthander won his fourth in a row against Italian after 4:6, 7:6 (5) 7:6 (2) battle on the Cental Court in Arena Armeec. The match lasted more than two and a half hours.
Seppi had one-set lead and a break in the start of the second but Muller came back. Both served well then but Muller impressed more with 23 aces in the match.
“To play Andy is never easy; he’s a great competitor,” said Muller. “In a close match like that, you have be lucky, and luck was a little bit on my side at the end. Overall, I’m happy with my performance.”
At the quarterfinals Muller will play the Marius Copil (Romania) who stormed past Blaz Kavcic (Slovenia) 6:2, 6:2.
Germany’s Maximilian Marterer continued his strong start to the season with a 7:5, 7:6 (6) win over seventh seed Joao Sousa. In the quarterfinals he will face the qualifier hero Mirza Basic.
