The draw promises high tension just at the start of the Sofia Open 2022. At the top of the draw, the holder of 3 Grand Slam titles and 16 more in ATP tournaments, Stan Wawrinka will meet Fabio Fognini (Italy) at the start of the tournament in a real blockbuster. The winner of that classic will play in the round of 16 against Fernando Verdasco (Spain) or Nikoloz Basilashvili (Georgia).
The Swiss will return to Sofia Open for the third time at the ATP 250 tournament staged from September 25th to October 2nd 2022, in “Arena Armeec”. He previously played at Sofia Open in 2018, reaching the semifinal, and 2019.
The three Bulgarian tennis players, who start their participation directly in the main draw of the seventh edition of the tournament in Sofia, learned about their rivals too.
Grigor Dimitrov, champion of the tournament in 2017, is third-seeded. Therefore, he will enter directly in the second round against the winner between Mikael Imer (Sweden) – Ilya Ivashka (Belarus). Dimitrov is in the half of the two-time champion and N1-seeded Jannik Sinner (Italy), so they may meet in the semifinals. Sinner is the two-time defending Sofia Open champion and goes for a three-peat on Bulgarian soil.
Dimitar Kuzmanov and Alexander Lazarov, participating in the main draw with a “wild card”, fell into the lower half of the draw. Kuzmanov will play against a tennis player from the qualifiers in the first round, and if he wins the round of 16, he will play Jack Draper (Great Britain) or Dusan Lajovic (Serbia).
Lazarov will play at the start against the Czech Jiri Lehechka, and if he wins, he will guarantee himself a match with No. 4 in the scheme Lorenzo Musetti (Italy), who is bye in the first round.
Second-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta will start participating in the tournament against Marc-Andrea Hüsler or a qualifier.
The seventh edition of the Sofia Open begins on Sunday with qualifying matches. They will continue on Monday with the qualifiers finals and several main draw matches.
