Jonny O’Mara and Ken Skupski captured their maiden tour-level doubles title as a team on Sunday, overcoming third seeds Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald 6-3, 6-4 in the Sofia Open final.
Ken, from one brother to another. You walked lie the royal family through the tournament…
Ken Skupski: It is a nice feeling. We were here last year when Neil was playing with Jammie. We unfortunately didn’t manage to get through second round match, which was quite important match for them to reach ATP tour final. We were disappointed because we couldn’t help them. But they got the title. But I am more happy right now. It was great tournament. We had great fun together. It was lovely to be back in Sofia. And we really enjoyed it.
John, it is been 2 years since your last ATP doubles title. How it feels?
Jonny O’Mara: It feels good. It’s been a long time. It is great to get this title and to know maybe this is the level you can compete. I feel good. To share this with Ken is classy. It is not often to play doubles with someone you really like. So, to have big moment with Ken probably is the best feeling I had on court for…Maybe ever. So, it is good.
Could this title be a stepping stone for you as a double for the rest of the year, or maybe next year?
Jonny O’Mara: I hope so – yes. For me personally I had good US Open. And then managed to keep the momentum here. So, I hope keep playing well the next few weeks and the new year. I am sure – Ken will do the same.
Ken Skupski: There are no many tournaments left till the end of the year. We sort of got different plan and set up for different events. We actually got really good run together, I mean the tournament that we played together in the past. It is something I will probably will give chance maybe afterwards in the future.
You are not the only Skupski that play for the title today. Your brother will compete for the trophy in San Diego. Any advices?
Ken Skupski:That is tonight. Now I am focused more on the Liverpool against Manchester City. That is the next big thing tonight in sport. I hope Liverpool will win that one. And then – Neil can make it three victories for the team. He is having a big opportunity to play well. He is playing with Joe Salisbury and he is enjoying playing with him. He’d got a tough match. I played them at the US Open and they are good team.
