Rafael Matos and David Vega Hernandez captured their fourth tour-level title of the season as a team Sunday when they overcome Fabian Fallert and Oscar Otte 3:6, 7:5, 10-8 at the Sofia Open.
In a hard-fought clash, the second seeds broke three times and showed their fighting spirit, rallying from 6/8 in the Match Tie-break to triumph after one hour and 38 minutes at the ATP 250 event.
Matos and Vega Hernandez now hold a 28-10 record on the season, having also lifted trophies together in Marrakech, Mallorca and Bastad. The 26-year-old Matos also won the title in Santiago, teaming with Felipe Meligeni Alves.
“Thank you, David, that we played together again. Congratulations to Oscar and Fabian, you had a great week, so you made it to your first final. Hope – we will come back in the next year”, said on-court Matos.
Spaniard Vega Hernandez has improved to 5-1 in tour-level doubles finals. He clinched his maiden ATP Tour title in Umag last year with Fernando Romboli.
Germans Fallert and Otte were making their team debut in Sofia. They dropped just one set en route to the final, but were unable to raise their level in the key moments against Matos and Vega Hernandez.
“First of all, I want to congratulate the winners. They played great today. Go on, guys! I want to thank my partner – Oscar. We reached our first final since we are playing together. We couldn’t win today, but I hope we will make the other step forward next time. I hope we will come back next year”, Fallert said after the match.
