Sofia Open 2021 will be staged from September 26th to October 3rd in Arena Armeec. The ATP 250 tennis tournament in Sofia will follow after the US Open and Laver Cup as approved by the ATP fall calendar.
Last year Bulgaria was among the few countries to stage an ATP tournament following the resumption of the ATP tour. The 2021 event will be the sixth edition of the most prestigious event ever hosted by Bulgaria.
“We are excited to once again be staging the tournament in Sofia and are working tirelessly behind the scenes to put on an exciting and safe event with our partners – The Bulgarian Tennis Federation” said Kay Godkhindi, Sofia Open Tournament Director. “It’s been a long road to get here and we have worked very closely with the ATP over the past few months to confirm the tournament week which was affected due to the rescheduling of Indian Wells from March into the Fall calendar and the recent disappointing decision of Shanghai having to cancel their event again in 2021. We recognize the challenges events are facing during these unpredictable times and are incredibly grateful that we are able to stage an event to provide jobs for the ATP tennis players, provide live content to TV and the tennis fans, and employment for suppliers and local personnel to work at the tournament”.
Stefan Tzvetkov, President of Bulgarian Tennis Federation stated, “Keeping the tournament in Sofia for a sixth consecutive year is an enormous success for Bulgaria and Bulgarian tennis. We have fought hard with a number of other European cities wishing to host an ATP tournament that week but because of our favorite sport, because of future stars that will inspire us, and because of the tennis fans, we’ve put all our efforts and we have retained the tournament that has become the face of our sport – at home and abroad. Our beautiful country will once again get huge exposure all over the world. The international TV audience stands at 580 million worldwide in addition to a reach through news media that is close to a Billion viewers worldwide. The world will once again look at Sofia and talk about Bulgaria. Each year the Sofia Open tournament gives us more positive emotions than ever. Sofia Open has become a trademark in the world of tennis and Bulgaria is now a regular spot in the ATP calendar. And the tradition goes on”.said Stefan Tzvetkov, president of Bulgarian tennis federation.
Details about the start of ticket sales for Sofia Open 2021 will be given in due course in accordance with the current epidemiological situation in Bulgaria.
