Wawrinka prevails tricky first match in Sofia

Stan to face Troicki for a place in the semis

Stan Wawrinka hit 16 aces to persist through a tricky second-round contest on Thursday at DIEMA XTRA Sofia Open, advancing 4:6, 6:2, 6:3 against qualifier Martin Klizan. It was just third match for the year for former world number three, after playing only two in Melbourne at Australian Open. Last year he missed a big part of the season due to injury after Wimbledon.

The beginning was tough for Stan. Klizan made a break in the seventh game and won the set with ease. In the second set the top seed came back to his best and after two breaks – in the fourth and eight games, sent the match into third set. In the end Wawrinka made one more break to 3:1 and excited the local crowd with the win.

The top-seeded Wawrinka moved into the quarterfinals and will face Viktor Troicki tomorrow. The Swiss has won all eight matches against the Serb so far.
