Wawrinka: I was surprised I was playing good

Top seeded Swiss happy with the Bulgarian support

Stan Wawrinka won his first encounter at DIEMA XTRA Sofia Open after winning 4:6, 6:2, 6:3 against qualifier Martin Klizan. After the match the three time Grand Slam champion thanked to the Bulgarian crowd for the support and expressed his excitement with the victory.

What are you first impression of your first match in Sofia?
I knew it will be tough match, against a tough opponent. It was my just third match after last year at Wimbledon. So I need matches, I need tournaments, I need confidence. My level fitness-wise is not yet at my top, but I was surprised I was playing good. The atmosphere was great. I got a lot of support. It helped me a lot to be here, to be focused to fight. I am really happy to get through this and I am really proud with the way I was fighting.

How did you feel during the match and now, after finishing it? Physically?
I think more I play, more points I play, more matches I play and win I feel better. I feel better at the end of the match than in the beginning – less hesitation, trying to move better, thinking less and playing the right shots. I am really happy. It was really important victory to me. Every match is important. Now the goal is to rest and to get ready for the next big match tomorrow night. I am here to win as much as I can. Most important to me is the way I improve day to day. I am trying to fight for at each corner of the court. I will try to do the same again tomorrow night.

Tomorrow you will face Viktor Troicki whom you beat in all 8 matches so far. Is this a reason for bigger confidence?
This is a good statistics. But it happened in the past. I am not in the same place as I was before. It is going to be a tough match anyway. Because if I have won many times against him now I need to focus on myself, try to improve the way I am playing, try really to be tough with myself, to fight every point. I know it is going to be really difficult. I am going to fight to win it.
