World number 11 will face the defending champion in the semis
David Goffin won the all-Bellgian clash at Garanti Koza Sofia Open. The world number 11 advanced to the semi-finals after an express win against compatriot Steve Darcis 6:1, 6:3 in just 73 minutes.
“I started the match pretty well. In the start of the second set it was close match because I had some break points to save,” analyzed Goffin. “I had my opportunities also, but didn’t take them. When you win first set 6:1, you always expect reaction. I managed pretty well after that and I am happy to be in the semi-final.”
About his compatriot Darcis he said: “It is never easy to play a friend. We know each other so well, we practiced together so many times. He knows me perfectly, I know his game perfectly. It is not easy because you don’t know if he is going to change something. Mentality is the hardest thing in games between friends – you don’t want to show too much emotion. It is never easy.”
Goffin guaranteed himself a match against the defending champion Roberto Bautista Agut in the semis.
“Bautista Agut never lost a match here, on the Center Court. He is very strong here. He is really good player – strong physically, precise with his forehand, moving pretty well,” added the second seeded. “Last match we played I was playing my best tennis. It was 2 sets to love. But I was sick. I couldn’t finish the match. I know I have the weapons to beat Roberto, but it is not going to be easy. He is great fighter and I need to play my best tennis to win tomorrow.”
