Stan Wawrinka will return to Sofia Open 2022!

The three-time Grand Slam winner is the third star to confirm his participation after Jannik Sinner and Gael Monfils

The three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka will return to Sofia Open for the third time at the ATP 250 tournament staged from September 25th to October 2nd 2022 in “Arena Armeec”. Wawrinka – a 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 US Open champion, has been awarded a main draw wild card for the seventh edition of the tournament in Sofia. The Swiss has won 16 ATP singles titles in his career and is best known for his trademark one-handed backhand. He previously played at Sofia Open in 2018, reaching the semifinal, and 2019.

Stan Wawrinka is the third tennis star to confirm his Sofia Open 2022 participation.

The two-time defending Sofia Open champion Jannik Sinner goes for a three-peat on Bulgarian soil.

The fairytale of the Italian talent started in Sofia in 2020 when he became the first player born in 2001 to win an ATP singles title. In 2021 Sinner became the youngest ATP 500 winner ever after lifting the trophy in Washington. Later that year he returned to Sofia and became the first player ever to defend his Sofia Open title. In November 2021 Sinner became the first player born in the 21st century to crack the Top 10 of the Pepperstone ATP rankings. After recently winning the ATP 250 “Croation Open Umag” 2022, he now owns six ATP singles titles and is the youngest player to do so since Novak Djokovic (2007). In 2022, Sinner has already played in two Grand Slam quarterfinals – first at the Australian Open and then again in July at Wimbledon where he lost an epic five-set thriller to the eventual winner Novak Djokovic. The Italian is currently 14th in the Race to the ATP Finals in Turin and second in the Race for the ATP NextGen finals in Milan.

Last year’s Sofia Open finalist Gael Monfils announced his Sofia Open return, hoping to go one step further and lift the trophy.
In 2019 Monfils played a fantastic quarterfinal, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas before losing to the eventual champion and current world No.1 Daniil Medvedev. Last year Gael reached the final where he was beaten by the defending Sofia Open champion Jannik Sinner.
This year Gael Monfils won the Adelaide International 1 for his 11th ATP Tour singles title.
